My secret desire in life is to learn Arabic calligraphy. Click on the link below to see some amazing examples. I know I would never be that good but they sure are inspiring and so intricate. The pictures are all made up of words, Arabic words! It is just about the coolest thing ever to me. I want to learn to write our surname (though it is as un-Arab as surnames come) beautifully on some canvas and then frame it. I have been dreaming about this for exactly four years now when I woke up in the middle of the night with the idea. I love surfing the internet, looking at all the various websites of Arabic calligraphy with all the different scripts. I have written our surname in Arabic in my head hundreds of times. I must say, I am a little disappointed to find all the Arabic calligraphy classes in London. There are none up in Hertfordshire where I live. But I am glad that I live near London. I guess I will just have to wait until Alexandra is in school and then I will take some lessons unless I can find some lessons online. It kills me to wait that long...

I completely agree with you about Arabic calligraphy - so beautiful. A few weeks ago I went to the BYU exhibit: Beauty & Belief - Crossing Bridges with the Arts of Islamic Culture. The guide talked about how the calligraphers of the Qur'an were highly regarded because they we so well trained and meticulous in their work. Their desire being that the beauty of their written calligraphic word would match the beauty of The Word. Fascinating. I hope you find classes nearby soon! XOXO - Chellese
