Craft Wednesday

For some reason, Blogger will not upload all of my pictures, so I guess you only get these two for this post. This term we have Wednesdays free for the first time in a couple of years. In the past, the girls were involved in a 2 1/2 hour drama course where they do singing, dancing, and acting. They put on a show at the end of every term. Since they decided to take a break from it this term, I have tried to implement "Craft Wednesdays." However, it has not happened every Wednesday like I had hoped. Never mind. Here is one Wednesday when it DID happen. We did scratch art. Abby painstakingly followed all the lines on this tiger with a "scratcher" and was quite proud of her finished product. It was not easy to do.

It was bonfire night, the night we did our crafts but because it was a school night, not many people were out celebrating. That all happened on the following weekend. On bonfire night, there are lots of fireworks so we decided to implement those into our artwork. We got cardstock paper and covered the whole thing with different colours of pastels. Then we painted black over the top of the whole paper. After the paint is dry, you then get your "scratcher tool" and scratch out a picture. All the colours from the pastels comes through to make very colourful lines on the picture. This is Sammy's with fireworks over the building and water. Didn't it turn out lovely? I wish you could see the others. They all turned out fantastic! The girls had so much fun doing it too (frankly so did I). I think our next craft day will be sewing. I will let you know how it goes....

(A great overview of recent Afghan history. Check out the bookseller's rebuttal book published this year.)

-Virgins of Paradise by Barbara Wood
(I loved this book. It focuses on an Egyptian family from the 1940s to the present. It was a really good look at Egyptian culture and politics as they have changed through the years.)

-A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

-The Chosen by Chaim Potok
(This is a good look at Jewish life. I liked reading the history of the formation of the state of Israel and the different reactions of various Jews throughout the book.)

(I loved this book. It is a very detailed account of the hajj and her take on Islam.)

--The Year That Changed The World: The Untold Story Behind the Fall of the Berlin Wall by Michael Meyer
(Meyer is a myth buster. The myth he tackles in this book is Americans' idea that communist regimes in the Cold War fell because of the United States' involvement. He is an excellent historian. I really enjoyed this book!)

--Hunting Eichmann: How a Band of Survivors and a Young Spy Agency Chased Down the World's Most Notorious Nazi by Neal Bascomb
(This book is now on my list of all-time favorites. It was thrilling and so fascinating. I highly recommend it!)

--Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez
(I loved this book. It was adventurous and inspiring!)
