Fall Activities

Wonderful World of Wheels, Naperville

This is an annual event in Naperville where all the city workers bring their big trucks for the children to climb on and explore. There were tractors, a police cars, a fire engine, a street sweeper, a semi-truck, sewer cleaner, digger, dump truck, trolley, cement mixer and others I probably forgot about. Most children just loved climbing up in the cab of all the trucks and honking the horn. Sammy in front on the wheel of the big digger.

Posing in front of the fire engine. Driving the fire engine. The sewer cleaner truck.

Sorry about the side-ways video. I have to remember not to do that...

The Shedd Aquarium, Chicago

petting a snake

The aquarium has the oldest known fish in captivity. It is an Australian Lung Fish and it was brought to the museum in 1933. It didn't really move much but it was huge. Ididn't get a picture of it.

Johansen Farm
We got to go to the farm again but this time Abby and Sammy got to bring their little friend Joseph. Abby loves to play with him because he has quite an imagination. They like to pretend they are on a battleship or they are space austronauts or flying in a helicopter (obviously all made up by Joseph). Those are just a few of the things I have heard them playing when I easedrop. Abby plays with Joseph better than I have ever seen her play with another child. It is very cute!

Salt Dough Creations

I made these when I was little. It is just two cups of flour, one cup of salt and one cup of water. Mix together to form a dough and cut out shapes. Then bake six hours in a warm oven 120 degrees. We painted ours when they were dry and then made necklaces and wands out of them.

Abby likes to do the washing up these days.

Leaf Walk - Knoch Knolls Park
We read a book about a bear that went on a leaf walk with its mother. It talked about how the leaves change during all the different seasons. After that, Abby had to go on a leaf walk and collect some leaves and talk about how they change too.

Knoch Knolls Park is about a five minute walk from our house. It is huge with lots of trails.

Our House

We took some more pictures of the house because we didn't have many good ones. I love our red door... By the way, for those of you concerned about our mowing issues (Charles mowing the lawn for five hours - see previous post), we mowed it again this past weekend and it only took about 45 minutes to an hour. It was only because it had not been mowed for two months and our grass was really thick that it took so long the previous time.

Kuiper Farm - "Apple Picking"

We went apple picking last weekend but I think Abby and Sammy liked the wagons more than any apples...
However, our friend Elijah probably liked Sammy more than the wagons or the apples.

Field Museum, Chicago

The Field Museum in Chicago has all kinds of stuff to see. It is similar to the Natural History Museum in New York or London. We went with our friends: Mary, Maddy, Savannah and Gabe.

man you are really out and about! way to go!
Getting anywhere for me has been so much harder now that the kids are in school every day. I just found a cute zoo though I might take the kids to soon.
I always thought of Chicago as ugly and grey - your posts sure show the opposite.

Fun to see the pics of you with the Mladineos. I love the one of Elijah hugging Sammy. Too cute.

I love all of the great things that you are finding to do around where you live. I really like the idea of kids being able to play on the big trucks, I think that is great.
I must say though that Abby is a little slow at doing the washing up, Lizzie has been doing it for months now. I do hope that Abby is better at getting things clean though, Lizzie does like playing in the water though.

Wow! your girls both look so much older in these pictures. I can't believe how long Sammy's hair is already. They both look sooo cute. Looks like you're getting around the town a lot, that's great! We need to do more outings here, hopefully soon.

We sure do miss you. Still, not a day goes by that we don't have an "Abby mention" from Sam. Someday they'll meet again and be great friends again, right??
