The above video is of Abby and her friend from school and occasionally Sammy, when she knew the song they were singing. The school has what they call "sharing assemblies" every Friday put on by a different class each week. It is a chance for the class to show what they have been learning that term to the parents and the rest of the school. Abby had her "sharing assembly" this past Friday. The previous Wednesday, her friend was over and they were practicing the songs they would sing and giving us a little "after-dinner entertainment." One of the songs is about King Henry VIII, there is also something called a Japanese pentatonic scale, some rock n' roll Jesus song, a french song and an Easter song.
As many people know, Abby has been almost painfully shy since birth. As a baby, she would literally not let anyone hold her but me or Charles. It was very frustrating at times. In preschool at four years old, she refused to sing with the rest of the class for a program. She has refused singing in church and school many times since. Anyway, I went to Abby's sharing assembly this past Friday and I was completely shocked. The assembly started out with Abby and two other girls introducing their class and welcoming everyone. Then Abby and the two girls took turns reading poems over the microphone while the other two acted them out. But that wasn't all... Near the end of the assembly, the class lined up shoulder to shoulder to sing their pentatonic scale and a song about King Henry VIII. The entire class stood in a line BEHIND Abby while Abby WITH the microphone OUT IN THE FRONT led and sang the songs. You could hear her the best because she had the microphone and it was almost if she was doing a solo. I was blown away! I couldn't believe that was my child. She did not even look nervous either. (I asked her afterward if she had been nervous and she said no.) She was moving to the music even and doing some actions which the class didn't seem to be doing.
Several mothers commented to me after the show that they thought Abby was shy and what happened? One mother told me about how Abby was at her daughter's birthday party a few weeks ago and because she had never been to their house before, Abby did not talk the entire party. Is this the same girl she asked? Her teacher, who is rather quiet and reserved was gushing all over the place about how well Abby did. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to record the sharing assemblies so I thought I would put up this video of her and her friend. I started thinking that I may have to try her in a drama club or something. Amazing! The other thing that was commented on was Abby's perfect English accent. Several of the mothers thought that was pretty funny. She seems to turn it on at school and around her friends and then goes back to American when she is around us. I don't know if she even consciously does it now. Sammy on the other hand, does not have an accent. She uses English phrases and words but still has the ol' American accent.
