Chinese New Year in London

We went down to London to celebrate Chinese New Year. They say, the celebrations in London are the biggest outside of China so how could we miss it? Here are the girls in Chinatown with all the lanterns hanging across the roads.

Upon entering Chinatown, we immediately saw a Chinese dragon. Alex was very excited. She had celebrated Chinese New Year at nursery school and when I picked her up from school on Friday, the first thing she asked is if we could go to Chinatown and see the dragons. Well, dragons we certainly saw...

There were dragons going around to all the restaurants with drums and music was playing. The girls were fascinated.

Sammy got a little paper Chinese dragon and was imitating the big dragons.

One of my main goals for going down to Chinese New Year was to get some lovely dim sum.

So after watching the dragons for a while, we set off in search of some dim sum...

We picked a restaurant near Leicester Square to have our dim sum. Abby and I mostly ate dim sum and spring rolls while Sammy and Alex just had rice.

Abby also had some egg fried rice. The owner of the restaurant kept coming over every few minutes giving the girls handfuls of fortune cookies. It was so much fun reading all of their fortunes. They kept them all, this year should bring them a lot of good luck...

Near the end of our meal, we realized the dragon was coming to OUR restaurant. The owner was running around getting lettuce to hang from the front door. I didn't realize that this was happening at the other restaurants and shops until I saw it from our restaurant.

They hung the lettuce and then the dragon soon came along to get it. It is all a sign of good luck when the dragon comes to "eat" the lettuce (at least, that is what our waiter told us).

Here he goes...

He does a bit of a dance and then goes for the lettuce.

Grabbing the lettuce...

He got the lettuce...

After grabbing the lettuce, he spits it out everywhere and everyone tries to catch it, again as a sign of good luck. It was very fun to watch. I am not really sure how they shred it all up like that so quickly.

What a lovely day. Here are Sammy and Alex with the Chinese loot on the tube ride home. The great thing is that we got to experience a lot and avoid the huge crowds that will be there tomorrow for the real celebrations. Happy Chinese New Year!
