Dead Bodies

So, I have finished my series on King Henry VIII and all his wives and I am moving on to read about dead bodies. I thought it a subject most appropriate for this time of year. I have come across a book that has peeked my interest called, "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" by Mary Roach. Apparently, it is an "oddly compelling exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers-some willingly, some unwittingly-have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings." This is the story of "our bodies when we are no longer with them." I especially find this book interesting since I have had a few experiences with dead bodies in my life. I worked on cadavers a few times at university, I experienced the exhibit called "BodyWorlds" here in London (see www.bodyworlds.com for an explanation), and I watched bodies burn on large open bonfires on the banks of the Gangis river in India. All of these experiences have definitely been morbidly fascinating to me and did not disgust me nearly as much as I thought they would initially. So, perhaps I am a bit on the sick and twisted side of things. But never mind whatever you think of me, I am still excited to read this book. I may even share a few excerpts from it right here on my blog to delight and entertain you all.

Hi. I'm Emilee's stepmom, Kristi. You might also be interested in a book called "The Body Farm" by Patricia Cornwell. There is an acutal place in Virginia I believe, where people have volunteered to be cadavers for medical research. Quite good.

Being an anatomy & physiology major in college, I, too, had a fascination with the human body and cadavers. As long as the face was covered (and I didn't focus on the fact that this used to be a living being) I was OK. BUT, I can no longer eat meat because of it. I can visualize exactly what part of the body I am eating. Guess there is a trade off for gaining knowledge. I would not be a good cannibal.
