In the news....

Two pieces of news that appeared on the BBC website this morning caught my attention:

2007 'probably wettest UK summer'
Torrential rain across the UK is likely to mean the summer of 2007 becomes the wettest since rainfall records began in 1914, Met Office figures suggest.
Provisional tallies show a total of 358.5mm (14.114in) of rain fell on the UK, narrowly beating the previous 1956 record of 358.4mm (14.110in).
The weather has been attributed to an unusually southerly jet stream, which brought depressions across the country.

'Very disappointing'
The Met Office, said: "These figures confirm what most people have already been thinking - this summer has been very wet and very disappointing for most."

The jet stream is a band of high-powered winds that determine weather systems across the UK. For much of the summer it was further south and stronger than in previous years.
Heavy rain in June saw towns and cities across South of England and East Yorkshire struck by flooding.
In July swathes of England and Wales were left inundated after intense rainfall led to rivers bursting their banks.

Flood Recovery Minister John Healey said the total cost of the flood damage was now estimated at £2.7bn.

In other news...
Today is the tenth year anniversary of Princess Diana's death. This is only interesting to me because it also marks the ten year anniversary since I came to England for the very first time in 1997. That summer I was living in Cairo, Egypt with my Aunt Gertrud and Uncle Paul. My aunt, my cousin Susi and I took a short trip to Israel. While in Jerusalem we were eyeing a bunch of nice looking Israeli soldiers, when we found out Princess Diana had died. Later, when we left Cairo to spend a few weeks in Germany, Susi and I found a cheap deal to fly to London. So, we hopped on a plane. When we arrived we saw the millions of flowers piled in front of Kensington and Buckingham Palaces as well as other places for Princess Diana. The flowers at Kensington Palace were piled as high as my chest and seemed to stretch as far as half of a football field from the gates of the palace. I thought that coming to London at the time, was a trip of a lifetime. I had no idea that I would return to live in this great city five years later. Isn't life just full of surprises?

Funny, Brian shared that news about the weather with me this morning. What a summer, eh?! I knew it was a wet one when it POURED ALL DAY on my birthday -- something that has NEVER happened before in my whole life!

With the Princess Diana bit - Michael and I were pretending to be staying the night in a fancy hotel (we used to do this when dating) and so we were in the lobby, on a couch, talking when the news interrupted and declared she was killed.
So, I don't know any good soup recipes - I loved Kamber's curry-carrot soup, and your spinache casserole. Oooh, wait, I'll send you my poor-man's-soup. (Potato soup) :)
